49ers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
By | August 28, 2008
The San Francisco 49ers ranked last in the NFL in total offense last season, but that does not begin to describe the problems the team faced on that side of the ball.
The 49ers averaged just 145 yards per game passing. The player once considered their quarterback of the future struggled through injuries and ineffective play and was going to be competing for his starting job.
Coach Mike Nolan hired Mike Martz to troubleshoot the offense, firing unproven Jim Hostler after one season. And Alex Smith, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft, would have to earn his job as the starter.
Now, as the 49ers head into the regular season, a journeyman named J.T. O’Sullivan has emerged as the starting quarterback.
“It really isn’t so much about Alex, but J.T.’s…

Jets Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
By | August 28, 2008
When the Jets began practicing this summer, all eyes were on two quarterbacks. Now only one is getting attention, and he wasn’t even on the roster when training camp began.
Brett Favre came to the Jets in a surprising trade on Aug. 6, and suddenly the team’s main focus shifted from the in-progress starting quarterback battle between Chad Pennington and Kellen Clemens to the anointing of Favre as the starter. That, and a crash course to try to get him up to speed after 16 years of him running the offense in Green Bay, which had a somewhat different system.
Thus far, the results have been somewhat mixed. Favre still has his trademark strong arm, as evidenced on a 49-yard throw in the third preseason game against the Giants in which wideout Jerricho Cotchery easily reached…

Bengals Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
By | August 28, 2008
About the only negative confronting the Bengals when they reported to Georgetown College in Kentucky for training camp July 27 was that rookie first-round linebacker Keith Rivers was unsigned. And he wouldn’t sign until 10 days later.
But then they started practicing, and a team that’s especially thin started losing key players: defensive end Antwan Odom, signed as a free agent in the offseason to bolster the NFL’s worst pass rush in 2007, sprained his foot in the very first practice. Before the week was out, starting wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh and tailback Rudi Johnson would be out with hamstring injuries. Chad Johnson, the other starting receiver, would make a quick comeback from ankle surgery in June 18 only to sustain a partial tear of the labrum in his left shoulder…

Patriots Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
By | August 28, 2008
Heading into training camp 2008, just over five months removed from falling victim to one of the great upsets in Super Bowl history, the Patriots were seen as one of the NFL’s top teams simply looking to shore up a variety of spots, mostly on defense.
A month later, and with the Kansas City Chiefs and Sept. 7’s season opener on the horizon, New England has at least as many questions, maybe more, than it did in late July.
The first order of business in New England these days is Tom Brady’s health. The reigning NFL MVP and record-breaking passer didn’t take a single snap through the first three weeks of preseason. He missed the second and third games with what was described as a “sore foot,” although some reports indicated the team originally feared the right foot issue…

Ravens Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
By | August 28, 2008
The Ravens are entering the season with more questions than when they began training camp.
Who is going to be the starting quarterback? Can the Ravens rely on running back Willis McGahee? How are the offensive tackles going to play? Is safety Ed Reed going to be ready for the regular season?
This is shaping up as a challenging season for first-year coach John Harbaugh, who has replaced Brian Billick after nine seasons.
The biggest concern is their quarterback situation, which has increased with drama throughout the preseason.
With Troy Smith out with an illness and Kyle Boller dealing with a shoulder injury, first-year coach John Harbaugh might have the most important preseason decision taken out of his hands.
The first quarterback to recover - Smith…

Steelers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
By | August 28, 2008
Pittsburgh might be a Super Bowl contender if it can answer two questions:
1. Will the offensive line play any better than it did last season?
2. Can the aging but talented defensive line hold up over the course of the season?
The second question might not be answered until later in the year, the way it was last season when defensive end Aaron Smith, among their most valuable players, left Dec. 9 for good with a torn biceps. What followed was not pretty as teams, especially the Jacksonville Jaguars, ran all over them.
They just aren’t strong enough behind their two starting defensive ends, Smith (32) and Brett Keisel (30), to lose either of them. Other than that, they should be strong on defense and showed it in their third preseason game against the NFL’s…
